So, I'm having a fabulous chat discussion at the mo' and we were wondering...does the BtVS fandom still have BNFs?  And if so, who are they?

We're just wondering.  Inquiring minds want to know.

*g*

Edited for other inquiring minds:  BNF=Big Name Fan.  Basically, the "big wigs" in the fandom.  I dunno exactly.  Someone else who has a better definition, feel free to chime in.  :D

Part of answering it depends on whether you are using it as a derogatory term to indicate self-important types who set themselves up as arbiters of what is and is not worthy and who start lots of wank, or whether you are using it to mean people who are very active and run communities and awards sites and things.

I definitely mean the second, although I wish there was a different name for it, since the term BNF has come to mean what you first described.

Hmm, I'd say there are some, but not as many as there used to be. Will have to get back to you on the whos though.

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

First of all..OMG, I lOVE your icon!

Second, yeah. It's funny, I have no idea who any would be anymore. My friend and I are both curious.

From: [identity profile] heeroluva.livejournal.com

Thanks. It's definitely a fav and I wish I had a bigger picture of it. :)

And I agree, so many of the people that first came to mind have moved to different fandoms or stopped writing period, so I'm just looking to see if there's anyone that's still around that fits the definition.

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

Yeah, I don't really know how to even determine who a "BNF" really is. It's just one of those things that I wondered about and asked a friend and we both were saying...hmmm...

Let me know what you come up with!

:D

From: [identity profile] heeroluva.livejournal.com

Well most of these used to be, but some I wouldn't consider to be so anymore. You even fit in the list. :) Am sure there should be more. This was just me going through things quick.

[livejournal.com profile] ash_carpenter [livejournal.com profile] c_woodhaven [livejournal.com profile] kitty_poker1 [livejournal.com profile] darkhavens [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip [livejournal.com profile] lit_gal [livejournal.com profile] denied_heaven [livejournal.com profile] jans_intentions [livejournal.com profile] creedcascade [livejournal.com profile] purpledodah

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

OH, I don't think I fit the list at all! LOL. But yeah, I agree with those too. At least the ones I know. Hee.

From: [identity profile] jans-intentions.livejournal.com

I think [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 (but she's really been one forever) and [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight. It's funny, I once wondered that with my friends when I was new. Perhaps also [livejournal.com profile] kitty_poker1 since she's really a fantastic beta. [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip has been producing great story in small ships for a very long time.

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

I'd have to agree on those!

How are you by the way? I haven't been reading lately because of real life drama, but I've been thinking of you and wondering how the original work is coming! I'm about 1/2 way through mine. I got stuck and am still stuck. *grumbles*

From: [identity profile] jans-intentions.livejournal.com

I'm writing although at this point I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with it. I did just see my book cover for Janitor. Hope to be able to post that sometime in future.

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

*headdesk* I'm such a goon! And of course I will! Just let me know the details.

From: [identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com

:::blushes scarlet:::

I am very flattered that you think I'm that important. I see myself as rather obscure though. The others on your list sure qualify, however!

Hate to break it to you sweetie, but you were the first name that came to mind when the question was asked. *g*

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

Nope. My chat buddy and I agree...whatever the new name for BNF will be, you will be the example of what they should be! *nods*

From: [identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com

I think you are a far better exemplar of a good BNF than I am. You really are.

My list would include folks like you, [livejournal.com profile] vamptastica, [livejournal.com profile] kitty_poker1, [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies, [livejournal.com profile] ash_carpenter, and [livejournal.com profile] lit_gal.

We should do the following:

a)come up with a better name that doesn't have negative connotations

b)agree on what qualities makes up said new name

Cause why not? Heh.

And yes, I agree with all of those. I'm with you though, and cringe at the thought of being one myself. Perhaps this is why the fandom is fizzling?

From: [identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com

We should...we really should.

And yes. Too many privates and too few generals can mean a very weak army.

*nods*

I think the new acronym should be "BFE"

Best Fan Ever

What do you think? *g*

From: [identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com

Moderating sites, having been in fandom for a couple of years, writing/art/vidding/puppeteering/something creative, lots of commenting and feedbacking...

*rolls eyes*

Oh, dude, bite me. Yet another self-congratularoy exercise in narcissism!

Uh... not you... :) But it's yet another example of people desperate to mention their friends. And I'm not immune. I first thought... ash, and you and angelstoy, and a couple others.

But... can't we all just be equally dorky, and loving of the fandom? Why do we need to assign uberfans?

And also... BFE? Dude... sounds like a title I try to avoid at a sci-fi convention :)

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

I actually agree! The subject came up when we were discussing how slow the fandom has been lately and how only a few people are still consistently posting and active. Which brought to mind all those BNFs who were ruling the roost before I came along, and I was wondering if such a thing still existed. No, we don't really need to assign uberfans, although it was mighty fun to actually post something that more than one person responded to. You know I like to mix it up on occasion. *g*

But come on! BFE! It's clever and witty! And also describes where I live, but that's a story for another day....you go to sci-fi conventions? You're an uber nerd. I like it. :D

From: [identity profile] jaded-jamie.livejournal.com

Yeah I believe it does.

One of them really, really gets on my bloody nerves though. Consistently, actually LOL

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

ROFL. I think that's kind of the point of the BNF's. Everyone who has ever mentioned them to me has included something along those lines. I have tried to respectfully request a name change so we can promote some new rulers who can corrupt absolutely, but I'm not thinking it's going to fly. Why can't I just be evil and get away with it? Huh? Huh?? I have to earn the moniker Naughty Nene somehow! Oh wait, that's from writing of the p0rn....

From: [identity profile] jaded-jamie.livejournal.com

How true.

BNFs are okay but they seem to get a bit d!ck big headed as time goes on and I have usually ended up leaving their flist cos of it. But there are a couple who are epic and humble and I love them. One who bugs the carp out of me, as I said... No names given to any of this ever. ;)

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

Exactly. It always seem to be about the drama, not the fandom. Then again, I don't know if its possible to be a true leader in an environment such as this. I guess I just miss the level of enthusiasm that was around when I first started and was thinking that if we had some new blood around that could get things livened up again it would be cool.

But I'll just keep writing my smut and not worry about it. Cause I've got all the BFF's I need, so who cares about the BNF's. :D

From: [identity profile] tamakin.livejournal.com

Hee! *ponders* Well totally imo, a few years ago there used to be a few bigwiggy folks lol, kinda the people who organised everything, started the cool new comms, and kept the coolest ones cool, if you get me :)

But thats totally changed now, or at least i feel it has, n i dont honestly know if any group of people are the 'leaders' in the fandom. Its alot more scattered now methinks.

From: [identity profile] jasonsnene.livejournal.com

I'd have to agree. I don't know if there is one particular group that are "leaders". Just can't figure out if that's helping or hurting the fandom. Probably a little of both, I'm thinking. Dunno. Something for me to ponder in my "i should be writing but i'm not" mode. :D

Hope the sock puppy is better today. Read about him last night! Poor thing.
