Part 5:
Angel gave himself time to get it together before he called Wesley. He wasn’t sure how he would react to the news that Angel was seeing Xander’s ghost. But it couldn’t be put off any longer. Whatever was happening was hurting Xander and Angel couldn’t live with himself if he let it continue.
There had already been so much pain. Now that he’d had some time with Xander, a chance to just be with him again, Angel was truly ashamed of how he’d acted when he lost Xander. He’d been horrible to his entire team, screaming and yelling and just acting like an ass all around. But it was his behavior towards Spike that he was particularly ashamed of.
Angel screamed at Wesley as he was asked yet another question about Xander’s service. He couldn’t seem to control his anger. Everyone slowly filed out of his office, leaving him to his grief. Everyone, that is, except Spike.
His childe simply plopped down on the leather couch in his office and threw his damn booted feet up on the seat. Angel was instantly pissed, and he growled out his displeasure. “Spike, for the last time, get your fucking boots off my couch.”
Spike snorted. “Yeah? Why don’t you come over here and make me, poof?”
Angel was out of his chair and across the room before he even knew what he was doing. His hand reached out, grabbing Spike by the throat, and he jerked him off the couch. “Keep them off.”
“Right. I’ll keep that in mind. Wanker.”
Angel threw Spike backwards and he landed in a heap but jumped immediately back to his feet. He cocked a brow at Angel and walked back up to the couch. He lifted his foot and sat it on the arm of the couch again.
Angel clenched his hand into a fist and let loose. He punched Spike repeatedly, screaming out his rage, until he finally had Spike on the ground. Angel ripped aside his duster and t-shirt, clearing the way for his fangs to sink into Spike’s neck.
Spike jerked up against him and the red haze of anger cleared. His fangs were still imbedded in Spike, but he stilled, no longer holding him tightly to the ground. Spike’s arms came up and wrapped around Angel. His voice was barely a whisper. “Let it out, Sire.”
Angel really hadn’t thought much about it at the time, but Spike had helped him so much that day. His childe knew when his demon was clawing at the surface, when he was so close to losing control that he could barely function. It was then that Spike pushed him into a rage, allowing Angel to not only vent his anger, but to also appease his demon by having his childe submit.
After that, Angel had felt marginally better. He and Spike never spoke of it but Angel knew that it was Spike’s way of showing that he cared. He wouldn’t let Angel lose control and that knowledge helped Angel push through. It also gave him the courage to pick up the phone and call Wesley. His childe was part of his team now, a team that would do anything for him, just as he would do anything for them.
Wesley was surprisingly supportive after hearing Angel’s story. He promised to look into it and get back to Angel as soon as possible. Angel let out a sigh of relief and hung up the phone just as the crew arrived to start the mornings work. Angel went to bed, knowing that Wesley would have something for him before he woke up.
As soon as he was gone, the crew started work. They had been instructed to advance the schedule and were getting ready to place the wards. It was ingenious really. Angel would be trapped, forever, and no one would be able to get to him. The crew severed all connections to the house, cutting off the power and phone lines. The house was now contained and the mage started his chant.
Los Angeles
Wesley poured over several resources on ghosts and hauntings but nothing matched up with what Angel was reporting. He was growing more and more frustrated by the time Spike sauntered in and he glared at the interruption.
“Easy there, Percy. No need to get the hackles all raised. Just coming by to see if you’d heard from the poof.”
“Yes, Spike. I’m looking into something for him now, as a matter of fact.”
“Got a demon problem?” Spike snorted at the thought that Angel would be able to find a demon problem anywhere. “Let me guess, he hired a demon demolition crew and they got dust in his hair gel?”
“No, the restoration is going just fine. It seems that Xander’s ghost is visiting Angel. And no nasty comments please.”
“Wot do you mean the whelp’s ghost is visiting Peaches?”
“Well, Spike, I should think that it’s rather self explanatory. Except that I can’t find mention of anything that Angel described in any of these texts.”
“Odd, that. Figured you could find anything in the wonder books.”
“Yes, well, one must know what one is looking for in order for the search to be most effective. Otherwise it’s a bit of the needle in a haystack dilemma.”
“Well then let’s get the Scoobie gang together, or whatever you guys call yourselves, and see what we can come up with. Can always give Ripper a call. He might have some ideas.”
Wesley called Fred and she rounded up Gunn and Lorne. He refrained from calling Giles, not wanting to put him through any more pain until he had more information. Spike was pacing and flicking his lighter impatiently by the time the rest of the team arrived. Wesley went back over what Angel had told them and they all sat there staring in disbelief.
Gunn spoke first. “Am I the only one wondering if Angel’s finally taken a ride on the crazy train? ’Cause that’s just some messed up shit.”
Lorne frowned and shook his head. “No, I don’t think he’s lost it. I’m pretty sure I would have sensed that. But then again, I’ve missed things before.”
“Is he sure it’s Xander’s ghost?” All eyes turned to Fred. “Well, I mean, Spike was ghost-like there for a while and he wasn’t really a ghost exactly. Could something like that be happening with Xander?”
“Hate to say it, Percy, but Fred’s got a point. You know the Powers that Muck have done worse with their Champions.”
Wesley hated to agree, but they had multiple examples of the Powers that Be doing just that. “Lorne, why don’t you give Angel a call and have him sing for you. Maybe we’ll pick up something useful. Fred, I’ll need your help researching other possibilities than haunting. Gunn, see if you can find anything here at the firm that would explain this occurrence. I don’t think we should discount Wolfram and Hart as a possible culprit.”
“Wot about me?”
“Spike, I want you to go to the hospital and see if you can find out anything. I still find it strange that Xander would refuse to allow Angel the chance to say goodbye. I didn’t question it at the time, but under these circumstances I think it’s wise to pursue all avenues.
“I think we’ve got a problem here.” They all froze at Lorne’s statement and turned to find him with his cell phone already pressed to his ear. “It says here that the line has been disconnected.”
Wesley grabbed his extension and dialed both the house phone and Angel’s cell. He received similar messages on both phones. “This can’t be good. Gunn, do we have anyone over there that can check on the house?”
“Not that I know of but I’ll find out.”
“Good. I’ll call Giles. He’s closer and we may need someone to get there right away.”
