There's a really interesting podcast that I saw on [profile] whedonesquethat talks about the episode Phases and Oz and being a werewolf that is really interesting and made me think about the character and why I like him.  There's also some discussion about Willow and Xander that I found interesting and would love to discuss.

So first of all, smack down on the guy for picking on Seth Green cause really, I liked him.  I thought that he was an excellent foil for so many of the characters both as a character and through his appearance.  I wish they had developed his character more because I felt like they set up so many things for him and then never followed through.  However, as a writer, this gives me the opportunity to take those little tidbits and go with them where I choose. But OMG when they said that Oz would have had a role in Angel season 6 if it hadn't been cancelled???????  That made the fangirl in me squee with so much delight.  Cause it really isn't a secret that I have a fascination with Angel/Oz.  I think Oz on AtS would have been awesome.  *sigh*  Seth Green is just amazing and that guy can kiss my toes for not thinking he is.

Anyway, so they didn't really like the makeup effects for the werewolf.  I have to admit, they weren't the best, but come on!  It's television on a limited budget!  This was early in Buffy before all the hoopla really caught on and I know I've seen worse!  I'm glad they made it better in later appearances though.  I had to chuckle about the commentator saying she liked naked Oz.  Right there with her!  Course the episode with him naked and in the cage at the initiative makes me ball like a baby every single time.

I was surprised that they didn't think Oz had a reaction to becoming the werewolf or the possibility of killing people.  I didn't get that reaction at all when I watched.  Maybe I need to rewatch as well.  Sure, Oz didn't run around screaming and threaten to off himself, but that just wasn't his character.  And as they so vehemently point out, when the wolf is in human form, they are human.  Does the wolf change your character as a person?  I've always thought that it would to some extent and when I write Oz!wolf, I do have him affected by the wolf in him, sometimes more than others, but in general, I try to stay true to Oz as a human and just add some slight changes.  I guess this has made me consider that I should not only more thoroughly examine the Buffy!Werewolf mythology, but make sure I'm consistent in my own writing.  The hissing thing they discussed made me laugh cause that drives me crazy too.  Hissing is not scary.  It's just not.  But oh wow, and Angelus/Oz fight in that episode?  *purr*  That would have been AWESOME.  I think they were right when they said they dropped the ball on that opportunity.  Vampire vs werewolf is classic!  And I now must write much more Oz because I just love him.

I have to say, that I agreed with some of what they had to say about Willow.  She really did seem to change quite a bit after the relationship with Oz ended.  He proposes that Willow was the only character that wasn't consistent throughout the show.   I agree that Willow changed.  But was it do to her coming out or do the the use of magic?  Or maybe it was just her growing up and becoming herself?  I don't know.  Probably a little bit of everything.  But I'm not sure I agree that the changes she underwent were only so that she could remain part of Buffy's world.  I'd be curious to know what the Willow fans on my list have to say about that cause although I like Willow, I can't say that she's my fav so those of you who spend more time thinking about her as a character, I'd like to know your thoughts.

They also suggest that Xander didn't change at all.  I know a lot of folks agree with that.  I have to admit that even as a Xander fan, I agree with that to some extent.  The use of Xander as comic relief was just so overdone and at times just plain not funny.  That said, I think that you can see the changes in Xander through the use of humor.  He went from the dopey, goofy pun guy, to a man with a dark, bitter edge of humor that I thought showed the changes in him better than anything.  Xander fans?  Your thoughts?

I really enjoyed what they had to say about Larry.  I haven't really thought about him so much as a character but their points on his changes and his role in the episode "The Wish" really made me stop and think about his character overall.   He went from the evil jock bully guy to an out of the closet hero.  Now that's an interesting character development. And since I just happen to be rewatching the end of season 3 for research on a new fic, I think I'll have to do something with Larry's character in it.

What else?  Uh, goodness, there were so many things in the podcast that were interesting but I think I've got the basics.  If you have a chance, have a listen and let me know if there's something you heard and would like to discuss.  I'm going to save it and relisten because there just isn't much out there discussing Oz as a character and I'm sure I'll want to listen again.
