Xander paced outside the University Community Center, grumbling under his breath. Oz sat on the steps, waiting for his friend to calm down. It looked like it would be a while. Just when he’d gotten comfortable, Xander whipped around to face him. “Why aren’t you more upset about this?”
Oz shrugged. Xander fumed. “Oh right. I’d forgotten ‘Oh ye of little words’ that nothing bothers you. You can just sit there with your quiet self and let everything just roll right on by. All’s well and all that crap. Do you read books for that? Is there like a Oz guide to Zen or some shit?”
“Nope.”
“Right. One word answers. This is great. I get to babble and pace while you just sit there looking all calm and smug. Just answer me one question: How the hell did I end up agreeing to this?”
“Willow used the look.”
Xander stopped pacing. Oz was right. One of Willow’s patented pouty looks and he was down for the count. “Well, that’s just wrong. I mean, why us? There had to be someone else! Why didn’t Willow come?”
“Lesbian.”
“Buffy?”
“Boyfriend.”
“Giles?”
Raised brow.
“Right.” Xander watched another group of giggling co-eds enter the building. “Oz, only girls are going in there. This is crazy.”
“Xander, chill.”
“Sure, I’ll chill. You aren’t the one who has to go in there and do this.”
Another raised brow.
“Oh, right. You’re going in too. Damn it.”
“Come on, let’s go.”
Xander frowned and entered the building. He slunk to a table in the back, only to be dragged further forward by a suddenly in charge Oz.
“Xander. We’re doing this.”
“WHY??? I don’t want to do this. This is crazy. Not to mention embarrassing. I mean, what if word gets out?”
“Word will get out.”
“I’m doomed.”
“Xander, you might like it.”
This time it was Xander’s turn to raise a brow, even though he didn’t do it quite as well as Oz.
“Oz, we’re at the University of Sunnydale Bachelor Auction with the full intention of purchasing our very own bachelors. I’m thinking this may not turn out as well as we might hope.”
Oz parked Xander in a chair very close to the stage that provided an excellent view. “Yeah, but we’re here to buy dates with members of the Lowell House so we can pump them for information.”
Xander snorted, then laughed so hard he had to slap his hand over his mouth to try to not draw so much attention to himself. Oz just raised a brow. Xander managed to get out “pumped” before he started belly laughing again.
Oz just smiled that secret smile of his. “Yeah, pump.”
Xander stopped laughing. For some reason it was no longer funny. It was kind of hot. “Do you really think…no, never mind. Forget I even started that sentence.”
Oz looked back at the stage. He noticed that several of the sorority girls around them had noticed their presence and were pointing and giggling. He hoped Xander didn’t notice or he’d make a run for the door.
Xander didn’t notice. He was too busy flipping through the handy dandy brochure that was on the table, listing all the available bachelors and their bios. His eyes were drawn to one guy in particular. He was practically drooling. Conveniently enough, he was in Lowell House. Xander knew who he was going to spend the Council’s cash to buy.
He pushed the brochure over to Oz and watched his friend flip through it casually before setting it aside. “What? You didn’t see anyone? Come on, Oz. There’s gotta be someone in there that caught your eye. That made the little wolf sit up and howl.” Xander was trying not to panic. What if they’d picked the same guy?
“Don’t worry, Xander. We didn’t pick the same guy.”
“Hey! How did you know that’s what I was thinking? How do you do that? Is it a wolf thing? Cause seriously, man, I need to know these things.”
Oz flipped open the book to the page Xander had been drooling over. “Your guy.” Then he flipped to the back of the book. “My guy.”
“Oh.” Xander took a good look at the guy Oz had pointed out. Damn. Oz had good taste in men. Who knew? Xander may have actually considered Oz’s choice if he hadn’t already spent a considerable amount of time drooling over his own choice.
Before he could talk to Oz about it, a very good looking sorority girl, in a very short mini skirt, stepped onto the stage and everyone grew quiet. She introduced herself and started the auction. Xander’s palms were sweating. He wiped them on his pants. His eye started twitching. There wasn’t much he could do about that.
The first few auctions were over quickly and the co-eds were giggling and laughing as their chosen dates left the stage and joined them at their respective tables. Then his guy walked out on the stage and Xander forgot how to think.
The announcer read from his bio. “Ladies,” she paused and looked at Xander and Oz, “and Gentlemen, we have a very special treat for you with our next bachelor. Riley Finn is a Master’s degree student in psychology and one of our Teacher’s Aide’s. He comes to us fresh from Iowa and would love to be shown just what is so special about California girls. Let’s start the bidding at $100.”
The auction began and the bids were flying. Riley really was gorgeous. Xander’s hand flew up. “Two hundred.” Riley smiled at him and Xander’s stomach did this funny flip-flop thing.
One of the co-ed’s grumbled and raised the bid. Xander glared at her. “Two fifty.”
“Three hundred.”
“Four hundred.” Xander smiled smugly when she didn’t raise the bid.
“Going once, going twice, sold to the adorable man in the Hawaiian shirt.”
Riley sauntered off the stage and over to his table. He took the seat next to Xander and smiled at him again. Xander grinned back. The next auction started and it was Oz’s choice.
She went through the same spiel, introducing Graham Miller and telling a little about him. Oz waited for her to open the bidding. As soon as she did, he raised his hand. “Five hundred.”
No one countered. Oz smirked and settled back in his seat. His date came down from the stage and settled next to Oz. So far, so good although there was even more grumbling from the women in the crowd.
By the time the auction was over, Xander was a bundle of nerves. He now had a date with one of the hottest guys he’d ever seen. Now what the hell was he supposed to do? The only things that came to mind weren’t exactly G-rated and he wasn’t sure you were allowed to do those things on a first date. Were you?
He turned to ask Oz but found his friend whispering in his date’s ear. His date looked very pleased with whatever Oz was saying. Nice. Oz was smoozing his date and Xander was sitting there like a lump on a log.
Xander turned to Riley who was looking at him with a shy smile. “You, uh, want to go get something to eat or something.”
“Sure.”
Oz perked up. “We’ll come, too.”
Xander blushed. Come. Oz would come. He really needed to get his mind out of the gutter.
Oz grabbed Graham’s hand and led the way out of the Community Center. Xander and Riley followed. Xander hoped that Oz had a plan because he certainly didn’t.
