Rebellious Desire Part 17

Lindsey was furious. He didn’t know who these assholes were that were currently keeping him from leaving Wesley’s office, but he planned on finding out and having them prosecuted. He was certain there were at least a dozen crimes being committed at the moment.

He heard the front door open and slam shut and rapid footsteps approaching the office door. The goons stood at attention, waiting for their boss to arrive, and Lindsey fought the urge to rise also. No, he would continue to sit here in Wesley’s chair where the idiots had placed him. He would not be intimidated.

It would have worked, if the very last person he wanted to see at the moment hadn’t been the person to push open the door. He jumped to his feet and started around the desk. “Wesley.”

Wesley’s words stopped him cold. “Lindsey, how could you?”

“How could I what? What have these assholes told you?”

Lindsey’s attention was drawn to another person filling the doorway, and he scowled when he realized it was Angel. “You son of a bitch! What lies have you been filling his head with? Are you that desperate for your little boy toy and his money that you’ll ruin me too?”

Angel’s eyes hardened and he stared Lindsey down. “I suggest you sit down and shut up. NOW.”

Lindsey defiantly crossed his arms across his chest and turned back to Wesley. “Wesley, don’t believe whatever they’re saying. It’s all lies. They’re just after your money. And I can prove it.”

Spike slipped quietly from the bed, grabbed his clothes, and headed for the door. With any luck, he’d be back before Riley even realized he was gone. If he wanted to catch Xander before they hid him away, it would have to be this morning.

He had a lot riding on this, too much to lose really, and he couldn’t let Xander get away. The door closed quietly behind him and Spike hurried to his car. This time he’d do it. He never heard Riley call his name, and he didn’t see Riley open the door to watch him drive away.

Xander paced restlessly, waiting to hear from Angel. He could tell that things were coming to a close. The tension in his father’s house was so thick it was frightening. Xander was determined to find out what was going on and stop any further pain to his family.

He crossed to his dresser and slipped his gun from its hiding spot. Even with everything that was going on, he hadn’t been carrying it. Gunn always told him that you didn’t carry a gun unless you planned on using it. The night Spike’s limo was attacked, Xander hadn’t had an issue pulling the trigger. He hoped he wouldn’t have to now, but he was tired of feeling defenseless.

Angel might have forgotten that Xander knew how to defend himself, but Xander hadn’t. He checked the safety then slipped the weapon into the back of his jeans. With any luck, it could stay there.

Angel listened as Lindsey lamented to Wesley about his team and their motivations. It was ridiculous, but at the same time, he really understood where Lindsey was coming from. It was strange that Xander had shown up when he did, especially if you didn’t know the circumstances.

Lindsey pleaded with Wesley to listen to reason but Wesley wasn’t having any of it. “Lindsey, for the last time, Xander is not after our money. If you would stop thinking in terms of dollar signs and start remembering our sister, you’d realize just how absurd your argument really is.”

The mention of Jenny had the desired effect on Lindsey. “Don’t accuse me of forgetting our sister, Wesley. I remember every day. Can you say the same? Or are you just so caught up in her long lost son that you can’t see what’s really going on here? He’s been gone for 20 years! And now he shows back up when you’re sick? It’s too convenient.”

“Lindsey, please. Give me a little credit. I’ve known exactly where Xander has been. I should have let you know more, but at the time you were so young I just didn’t feel I should burden you. Xander is Jenny’s son, and he’s not here for the money. Hell, the money has been his all along! Do you really think I would deny our sister’s son his legacy?”

Lindsey started. “You said you’d cut him off.”

“And I had. Physically, emotionally, he didn’t exist to me once Giles took him away. But I would never take away what was rightfully his. Xander was just a child, a baby really. It wasn’t his fault that his father was a fool.”

“Wes, I don’t understand.”

“I know you don’t. And now is not the time to go into all the details. Just trust me. You can do that, can’t you?”

“You don’t even have to ask.”

Wesley sat on the corner of the desk, and he and Lindsey shared a long look. Then Wesley turned to Angel. “It wasn’t him.”

Angel’s expression turned icy. “Yes, Wesley. It was. We have proof.”

Wesley turned back to Lindsey. “You would never hurt Xander, would you?”

“What? Of course not! I can’t believe you’d even think I was capable of hurting him! I may loathe the little bastard right now but he is Jenny’s son! I’d never hurt him.”

Wesley turned back to Angel. “We’re missing something.”

Angel still wasn’t convinced. “Wesley, everything points to him. I think we should call Kate and have her handle this from here. Because, quite frankly, I’m ready to strangle him and I know that would really piss Xander off.”

Xander wandered through the house, trying to settle his nerves. He wasn’t entirely surprised when there was a knock on the front door. He answered it himself, even though Angel would probably have a coronary if he found out.

“Spike. Hey, come on in.”

“How ya doin’ pet?”

Xander shrugged. “Been better. And you? How’s Riley?”

“Shagged out and in bed where he should be.”

“TMI!” The information brought a smile to Xander’s face and put him at ease, exactly as Spike had intended.

“Hey Xan, can I talk to about somethin’? Private like?”

“Sure. Come on into the study. I think Dad has some of those gross beers you like hiding around in there.”

“Sounds a treat, luv.”

They walked into the study, and Xander rummaged in the small cabinet for the beer his father kept in there for “emergencies”. How they could drink warm beer was beyond him, but that’s what both Spike and his dad preferred. He handed Spike the bottle and opener, and wondered what had his friend so antsy. Then his thoughts were drawn elsewhere. He heard the smallest sound, something unfamiliar and he tensed, looking around suspiciously.

Spike took the beer and lifted the cap. He took a long swallow and sighed. “Look, Xan. I…oh hell.” Spike suddenly realized that he’d lost Xander’s attention. His friend appeared to be listening for something. He reached into his coat pocket and Xander tensed. He paused, trying to figure out what the best way to do this was.

Spike was right; Xander’s attention wasn’t on him. Xander’s senses were screaming, the feeling of danger nearly overwhelming him, and without another thought, he tackled Spike.

“What the? Xan! Get off, man. What are you doing?”

“Stay down, Spike.”

Spike finally realized just how tense Xander was and then he noticed the gun that had appeared out of nowhere in Xander’s hand.

“Luv?”

“Shh.”

“Xan, I was just trying to…”

Xander listened carefully, then raised off Spike slightly. “Spike, get under the desk.”

“Wot? Fuck that. No way. Wot’s going on?”

“Someone’s in the house.”

“Huh?”

“Come on.” Xander pulled Spike to his knees, and they crawled carefully behind Giles desk. Then he got his phone from his pocket and speed dialed Angel.

Angel was still arguing with Wesley about calling Kate when his cell phone rang. He answered, but only because it was Xander.

“Hey, babe.”

Xander’s voice was a mere whisper. “Angel, someone is in the house.”

“What! Are you okay?”

“Yeah, Spike’s here and…I don’t know. I heard something and just knew. And Angel, there wasn’t a guard out front, and Spike just walked right up. I didn’t think you were going to let anyone in until you got back.”

“Shit. I’m on my way. Stay there. I’ll call Kate.”
