Part 6:

Spike went through the sewers to get to the hospital and was snooping through the surgeon’s office when the man came in. He immediately vamped out and hand the doctor by the throat. “Hello, Doc. I want some information, and if you’re real cooperative-like, I’ll think about not breaking every bone in that pretty little surgeon hand of yours. Just nod, if you understand.”

The surgeon nodded around Spike’s hand and he eased his hold. “Now, tell me about Xander Harris.”

“I don’t understand. Mr. Harris passed in surgery like I told you before.”

“There’s something you aren’t telling me and I’d hate to have to start breaking fingers to find out. Well, actually, I wouldn’t hate it at all.” Spike grabbed one finger and started bending.

“Look, we told Mr. Harris he was too old for the surgery but he insisted. I don’t know why his son was so upset by the outcome. We’d made it very clear.”

“Too old? How the hell is in his twenties too old?”

“Twenties? Mr. Harris wasn’t in his twenties. If I recall correctly, he was nearly 65, just ready to retire.”

“Well, now, Doc, we’ve really got a problem because the man I’m looking for was in his twenties and here to get his eye fixed. Not in his sixties.”

“I, well, that doesn’t make any sense. I’m not an eye surgeon.”

“Then I suggest we take a walk and you help me find my friend.”

Wesley and Fred poured over their research until Fred jumped up excitedly. “Wesley, why would Xander be feeling pain? Ghosts wouldn’t feel residual pain, would they? I mean, I’ve never technically seen a ghost except for Spike, well, and Phantom Dennis, but technically, I haven’t seen him either so I don’t suppose that counts.”

“I don’t know, Fred. I agree that it’s troublesome.”

“But, Wesley, what if, and I know this is going to sound crazy, but what if Xander isn’t dead? What if he’s doing some sort of astral projection or something? Then he’d know if something was going on with his body, but if he was unconscious, he wouldn’t be able tell exactly what it was.”

Wesley pulled another book from the stack and flipped through the pages quickly. “I think you may be right. Maybe Spike will find something at the hospital that will shed some light on things.”

Gunn entered the office with a stack of paperwork that he dropped onto Wesley’s desk. “We have another problem. It looks like the company Angel hired to do the restoration work received a substantial transfer from us.”

“Do we know who approved the transfer?”

“It’s listed as Angel, but I handled the payment from Angel and it wasn’t through this account. I’ve traced the transfer back and have security bringing up the manager of accounting.”

Spike entered the office next, carrying a rolled up rug over his shoulder. Wesley might have wondered what he was doing if he hadn’t seen a shoe hanging out of the end. “Good Lord, Spike, what did you do?”

“Seems like the good doctor here pulled a fast one on us. Would have just tortured the information out of him there, but figured Charlie here might have to bail me out so I decided I’d just bring him back here for safe keeping.”

Spike flipped open the rug and the doctor tumbled to the floor. He had duct tape across his mouth and around his wrists and ankles. “Spike, that isn’t Xander’s doctor.”

“Well, actually, it is. It was real convenient that there were two Mr. Harris’ in the hospital having surgery that day. And somehow some paperwork got mixed up and the other Mr. Harris’ doctor got sent out to us.” Spike grabbed the duct tape covering the doctor’s mouth and ripped it off. “Now, why don’t you tell us exactly how that happened, Doc.”

The doctor blinked up at Spike for a moment. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Fred, luv, will you bring me one of Percy’s good knives? I think the Doc here has a couple extra fingers he could do without.”

“Sure, Spike.” Fred opened Wesley’s weapon’s cabinet and eyed the selections carefully before bringing one to Spike. “This one should do it. It’s a little dull, but that would make it hurt more, right?” She smiled innocently down at the doctor but he could see the glint of steel in her eyes.

“Okay, okay. Look, all I know is when I went into talk to Mr. Harris’ family, there was this guy there who said that he would be transferring Mr. Harris into a private facility for recovery. He had documentation and everything looked above board. I thought it was strange, but it all seemed legitimate.”

Wesley crouched down in front of the doctor. “And just what did ‘this guy’ that took Xander look like.”

“Young guy, longish hair, tattoos, sounded like he was from Texas.”

Gunn, Lorne, Fred and Wesley all gasped. “Lindsey.”

Spike frowned. “Doyle.”

Wesley turned to Spike. “Doyle? What do you mean, Doyle?”

“Well, I wasn’t going to say anything until Angel got back but I guess the Powers that Be sent me my own vision boy to help fight the good fight and all that rot. Goes by Doyle.”

“Gunn, see if you can locate Lindsey. Lorne, can you do a reading on Spike and see if you get anything?”

Spike started belting out a Sex Pistols tune while glaring at the surgeon. Lorne clutched his head and collapsed into a chair. “Enough, Lemon Drop. I’ve got all I need. Doyle is indeed Lindsey and he’s been playing us like a fiddle. Angelcakes is in serious trouble.”

Wesley returned to the phone and called Giles. He explained the situation and asked if Willow could do a locator spell on Xander and if Giles could head to Galway. Whatever Lindsey was planning, it was happening soon and they needed to get both Angel and Xander to safety before it hit.
