I always liked how in the show - they would portray Angel as this self-depreciating, uber-humble, wanna be human vampire. Periodically, they would let the real Angel out of the box. It wasn't all Angelus with no Angel in the mix, Angel hid his darker, stronger side most of the time. The humans just forgot and Angel conveniently didn't remind them...
