Prologue

Michael looked up at Selene’s quiet indrawn breath. She was rarely surprised so he knew something must be either very good or very, very bad. Her gun was still at her side so he knew it was likely the former.

They were back where it all began, in the lab where he’d been infected with lycanthropy and where Selene had risked everything to save him. Michael felt the rush of memories with every look around this place. Selene was standing in front of a board and as he moved behind her, Michael realized that it was a family tree of sorts.

“What is it?” He leaned into her, the newness of her, of them, still intoxicating him. She pointed to a name and his eyes were drawn to it. “Aurelius. What’s that?”

She turned to him and her eyes flashed from their normal chocolate brown to a clear crystal blue that signaled her shift to her true form. “That, my love, is how we’re going to stop this war.” Michael felt his body responding to the power of hers and his face shifted slightly, his eyes bleeding to black and revealing his fangs. He still had so little control over his beast.

Her mouth fused desperately to his and their eyes and forms shifted back to human. They parted after several moments and he took her hand in his. “Let’s get out of here.” The memories were pressing in on him and he was afraid to stay here for much longer.

Michael led the way and, although he could sense others nearby, they stayed away, all frightened by the power they could feel pouring from him. He trusted his instincts in this, just as he trusted Selene to know how to get them out of the vampire war they’d started simply because they wanted, no needed, to be together.

And so, mere hours later, he found himself on his way to California, the last known location of the Master of the Aurelius line, Selene hidden away in the bowels of the plane.

Selene hadn’t taken the time to give him all the details but he knew that the Order of Aurelius had been banished from the coven centuries ago for not following the principles it set forth. Michael knew the rules were simple. No eating humans or drinking human blood. Keep their world secret from the humans around them at all costs. Do not delve into the history of the vampires. And finally, do not under any circumstances, have any contact with Lycans.

The last two Selene defied, for him. The elders of the Coven were all dead, because of him and it nearly cost her everything. It seemed that the Aurelian’s had broken all four of the Covens edicts and were still living by their own code.

And now they were seeking out their Master for help. Selene was convinced that his familial connection to both the Aurelian and Corvinus clans would be an irresistible incentive to the mysterious leader. Michael wasn’t so sure but they were out of options.

As the plane landed in L.A., Michael felt a moment of panic at the bright sunlight before he forced both his mind and body to calm. Not long and they would be seeking out the local vampires to help them track down this elusive master.
