Angel stormed past the minions in the lobby and headed out into the night. Those two idiots were going to mess everything up. Xander needed to be handled with care, and as much as it annoyed Angel, right now that included playing nice with Oz. As for his childe, oh he was going to get it later.

He was several blocks away before he realized that he was being followed. Without breaking his step, he took a cautious sniff of the air. Nope, not one of his. Well, he was in the mood for a fight so now may just be the time to get out that aggression he’d been saving up.

Turning at the next street, Angel leapt up and grabbed the dangling fire escape and quickly climbed to the roof. He would have a better vantage point from here and the element of surprise.

He peered quickly over the edge of the roof and caught a glimpse of a figure darting into the shadows. Now was the perfect time to strike. Angel stepped to the ledge and jumped, landing gracefully a few paces behind his errant follower.

The vampire turned and Angel grabbed him by the neck. “With one squeeze, I can take your head off and turn you to dust.” The vampire whimpered. “Who are you and why were you following me?”

The vampire tried to speak. Angel loosened his grip slightly and waited. “My master sent me to find some vampires who have gone missing in L.A. Please, I’m just looking for them.”

Angel growled. “That doesn’t answer my questions.” He squeezed tighter. “Who. Are. You?”

Another whimper before he had his answer. “My name is Joseph.”

“Very good, Joseph. Who is your master?” Angel snarled the words. He hated being patient and wanted to just rip the fools head off.

“Um, you are?” Angel sighed. What an idiot. “Joseph, who sent you here?”

“Oh, um, Lucian.” Angel recognized the name. Lucian was the coven master of the vampires he captured on the night of his vision of Xander. As he realized that, he was even more angry. This was a very strange coincidence.

Angel didn’t speak again, just dragged Joseph behind him by his neck and headed back for the hotel. So much for his peaceful walk to clear his head and calm his nerves. The minions at the door jumped to attention when he approached.

He threw Joseph onto the floor and turned to the guards. “Bring me Lorca. Now.”

Spike heard the commotion in the lobby and hurried out, followed by Oz. Angel realized that Joseph must be a little smarter than he seemed when the vampire stilled on the floor. It certainly wouldn’t be wise to antagonize Spike.

Lorca entered the room at a run. He was the master vampire Angel captured so many months ago. Angel glared at him and looked down at Joseph. He didn’t even have to speak.

“Master, I have no idea what he is doing here. I have not spoken to my former master or any of his clan since I pledged my service to you.” Lorca hoped that Angel would believe him. He knew well the price of betrayal.

Angel moved to Joseph and pulled him up by the hair. He tossed the vampire in Lorca’s direction. “I suggest you find out exactly why he is here and why he dared to follow me. I am not pleased, Lorca. Childe, make sure the questioning is thorough.” Spike nodded and followed Lorca out of the room.

Oz looked around the room, wondering at the tension. When Angel stalked to his office, Oz followed. He was in time to see Angel punch his fist through the wall. Oz sank down into a crouch beside one of the chairs and waited.

Finally, Angel turned around and acknowledged him. “That was a vampire from the clan that plotted against me the night Xander came to us. Now they are back within hours of Xander’s return.”

Oz didn’t need any other explanation. “Spike will find out what’s going on.” He may not agree with everything the vampires were doing, but he did have confidence in their ability to protect Xander’s interests.

“I don’t doubt that. Oz, if you really plan on staying, I think we need to establish some ground rules.” Angel watched Oz stiffen and hurried to continue. “The fact that you are here, in my home, places you under my protection. It also places you under any threat that comes against me.”

He waited until Oz acknowledged his statement before continuing. “If you leave the hotel, you need to have guards with you. This is not open for debate. We have a team assigned to Xander and will add your protection to their duties. He won’t be leaving the hotel any time soon so we will be able to have plenty of coverage on him.”

Oz stared at Angel for a moment before agreeing. “I get that. I don’t like it, but I get it.  What else?”

“No more fighting with Spike. He is not only my childe, but also my second. You are now part of our inner circle and I really need to present a solid front. Feel free to disagree in private, but while we are out of our rooms, you need to support both Spike and me.”

Oz sighed. “I can’t promise anything, but I’ll do my best. For Xander.”

Angel knew that was as much as he could expect. “Good. Now, I’d like to go over everything that happened over the past few months with you. Maybe you’ll see something I’ve missed.”
