Only one more week to go in my Novel writing class! I can't believe how much I've learned in just 4 weeks. Amazing really. It's not like it's stuff I didn't know...but it's presented in a way that makes me better understand how to incorporate the tips into my work. Funnily enough, no one in the class likes supernatural fiction. But I'm plugging right along with it and even when they don't get what I'm writing, the other class members have been supportive and ask good questions. It's odd writing to an audience who has no interest in the genre I write in. You guys have spoiled me! You know about Vampires and Werewolves and the rest. They don't so their perspective is really interesting.
I'm working on the third chapter of my original now. I had the first chapter written before class started but am going back and reworking it quite a bit after some of the suggestions of the instructor. It's really exciting, but much harder for me than writing fanfic. I am having a harder time adjusting back to fanfic writing after working on this class!! I didn't realize just how different the two areas were to write before. I mean, if I say Spike was wearing his duster, you all know exactly what I'm talking about! If I put my OC in a duster, I'd have to give more explanation to it than that! I'm hoping my fanfic writing gets a lot better after this experience.
This week, I have to write either a synopsis of the book or a jacket cover blurb. I have no idea what I'll come up with for it! Last night in class we had to come up with a metaphor. He gave us a topic (a man looking at a barn after having learned that his son was just killed in the war) and we had to write about it without coming out and saying that his son had just died. I really liked what I came up with, especially since we only had 5 minutes to do it.
The instructor recommended that we get Alice LaPlante's "The Making of a Story". I bought tons of writing books several years ago and tend to pick up books every now and again, but this one is different. It's really good and if you're looking for a new book on writing, I recommend it.
Well, off to do...something. I haven't decided what I'm going to work on yet today.
